The 500 Dalton Rule

The majority of expensive skincare cannot physically penetrate your skin. It is molecularly impossible.

In 2000, Dr. Jan Bos established that the molecular weight of a compound must be under 500 Daltons to allow corneal penetration. Anything larger sits on the surface.

Clinical Glossary

TEWL (Transepidermal Water Loss)

The process of water evaporating through the epidermis. A compromised skin barrier increases TEWL, leading to dehydration.

Stratum Corneum

The outermost layer of the epidermis, consisting of dead cells (corneocytes). The primary barrier to product penetration.

pKa

The pH at which exactly half of an acid is in its active, free-acid form. Crucial for understanding AHA/BHA efficacy.

Common Formulation Errors

  • 01. Jar Packaging for Antioxidants: Air exposure rapidly degrades Vitamin C and Retinol. Look for airless pumps.
  • 02. Wrong pH for Acids: Glycolic acid at pH 5.0 acts only as a humectant, not an exfoliant.
  • 03. Essential Oils: Often included for scent, volatile compounds like limonene are known contact allergens.
