Methodology

How we analyze, categorize, and evaluate skincare formulations.

The Institute for Skincare operates on a strict, evidence-based methodology. We do not evaluate products based on scent, texture, or marketing claims. We evaluate based on chemistry.

Primary Sources

Our data relies exclusively on double-blind, peer-reviewed dermatological studies published in reputable journals, including:

  • Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD)
  • British Journal of Dermatology
  • Journal of Investigative Dermatology

The Evaluation Matrix

When analyzing a commercial formulation, we assess three non-negotiable vectors:

  1. Active Concentration: Does the product contain a clinically relevant percentage of the active ingredient (e.g., 10-20% for L-Ascorbic Acid)?
  2. pH Environment: For acid-dependent molecules (AHAs, BHAs, LAA), is the formulation's pH close to or below the molecule's pKa to ensure a sufficient free-acid value?
  3. Packaging Stability: Is the active protected from rapid oxidative degradation (e.g., airless pumps or opaque glass for retinoids and Vitamin C)?
